A Specimen of Type
18 November 2006
It’s been a long time since I mentioned my progress in designing my first font. Unfortunately time gains speed as I get older and side projects get put on hold—even with the best of intentions. However, I have managed to add a little spit and polish here and there, and now I’d like to share a specimen of my work so far…

Had Frogs Titling actually appeared in the history of type, it would have lived sometime during the eighteenth century. Its appearance is much like Caslon’s larger cuts (See Matthew Carter’s Big Caslon), but slightly darker in density and wider in stance. A few alternate characters such as a descending J, a U with a vertical stroke, and a long-tailed ampersand offer some flexibility, and I plan to add a few ornaments to round out the display typographer’s toolkit. By no means will it be an accomplishment such as Mantinia, but I’ve enjoyed working on my little creation.
